One-Way Traffic on the IJssel Starting Friday Due to Low Water Levels
Rijkswaterstaat has announced that one-way traffic will be enforced on the IJssel river between Zutphen and Westervoort starting Friday due to critically low water levels, with depths dropping as low as 1.45 meters in some areas. Ships are restricted to traveling only toward Arnhem, forcing vessels entering from Germany to detour approximately 300 kilometers via Amsterdam and Tiel. The Royal Dutch Inland Navigation Association described the measure as a necessary evil that increases time and fuel costs for shipowners but is preferable to closing the waterway entirely.
