Rhine Water Level Hits Record Low Due to Drought
The Rhine reached its lowest recorded water level at Lobith on Sunday, measuring 6.10 meters, which is two centimeters lower than the previous record set in August. Rijkswaterstaat attributed this decline to a lack of rainfall in Germany and Switzerland over recent weeks, noting that measurements dating back to 1866 have never shown such low levels. While no shipping restrictions are currently required on the Rhine, one-way traffic has been implemented on the IJssel from Friday, forcing vessels traveling between Zutphen and Arnhem to take a 300-kilometer detour via Amsterdam.
