Dutch Cruise Ship Runs Aground in the Rhine Near Cologne as River Hits Record Low Water Levels
The Rhine near Cologne has reached a historic low water level of just 43 centimeters, two centimeters lower than the previous record set last August. This extreme drought, exacerbated by a lack of rain and reduced snowmelt from the Alps, has caused significant logistical disruptions for shipping, forcing cargo vessels to reduce their loads. On Saturday, the Dutch cruise ship MS Dutch Melody ran aground in a navigation channel near Cologne before being freed by another vessel. The low water levels have also impacted traffic on the IJssel river in the Netherlands, where one-way traffic has been implemented.
