Biodiesel for Ships Now Cheaper Than Conventional Marine Fuel
For the first time, biodiesel prices in the Port of Rotterdam have fallen below those of regular marine gas oil (MGO). Argus reported biodiesel at $985 per ton before rising to $1240, while MGO surged to over $1528 per ton due to supply disruptions linked to tensions between the US and Iran. Biodiesel, produced from waste streams like used frying oil, remains unaffected by crude oil prices. Suppliers lowered costs to meet EU CO2 reduction targets, increasing sales in Rotterdam. However, the Netherlands Emissions Authority notes that competition from aviation and freight sectors may impact future pricing stability.
