More Funding to Assist Individuals at Risk of Debt
Social Affairs Minister Vijlbrief announced an annual allocation of 20 million euros to help people facing potential debt, aiming to double the number of individuals municipalities can reach. Since 2021, municipalities have been required to contact residents with payment arrears for rent, energy, water, and healthcare, but insufficient staff and temporary contracts hindered previous efforts. With this structural funding, officials expect more personal contact instead of letters, which are often ignored. Approximately 700,000 people are currently in debt, and last year, municipalities only successfully contacted one in five of the over one million signals received. Additionally, new agreements with landlords and energy companies will encourage earlier intervention to resolve issues before they require municipal notification.
