National Heroes' Cemetery Loenen Expanded to Include New War Victims
The National Heroes' Cemetery Loenen has been expanded with a ceremony attended by cabinet members and relatives to accommodate 500 additional graves alongside nearly 4,000 existing ones. The expansion allows space for victims of future conflicts and those whose families can no longer maintain graves, with two war dead recently reburied under the stewardship of the Oorlogsgravenstichting. Managed by the foundation since 1949, the site holds notable figures such as Anton de Kom and Walraven van Hall, as well as recent casualties from Mali and Afghanistan.
