Fifth Person Dies from West Nile Virus, Infection Count Rises
The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported that a fifth person infected with the West Nile virus has died this year, though it remains unclear if the virus directly caused the death. The total number of human infections in the Netherlands has risen to 44, following sixteen new cases reported last week. All new patients contracted the virus through mosquito bites, with the majority of cases located in South Holland (23) and Utrecht (10). Additionally, 48 new infections were detected in horses and 71 in birds. The RIVM estimates the actual infection count is significantly higher. Meanwhile, blood bank Sanquin Research has resumed testing all blood donations in nine provinces for the virus, a control measure previously suspended due to the absence of cases for several years.
