Millions allocated to address truck parking shortage on highways
The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has allocated 43 million euros to create more and better parking spaces for trucks, aiming to reduce the dangerous practice of drivers parking on highway shoulders. This measure addresses a national shortage of approximately 4,400 spots, with significant deficits in Brabant (776) and Limburg (1,551). Drivers often park illegally due to strict driving and rest time regulations, where fines for violating these rules exceed 1,000 euros compared to 320 euros for shoulder parking. Rijkswaterstaat is simultaneously installing anchored red-and-white bollards to prevent vehicles from camping on roadsides. Transport en Logistiek Nederland warns that this investment alone will not resolve the deficit, which is projected to reach 7,000 by 2040 without further measures.
