Rapid Construction Must Address Housing Shortage, but Deficit Is Not Easily Resolved
Housing Minister Elanor Boekholt-O'Sullivan announced the Action Plan for Accelerating Housing Construction, a 50-point strategy backed by €7 billion to speed up building and address the housing shortage. The plan continues initiatives from previous cabinets, such as simplifying regulations and promoting interim rentals, while introducing five large-scale construction sites for thousands of homes. Despite these efforts, the annual target of 100,000 new homes remains unmet, with only nearly 80,000 added last year. The minister aims to halve the average eight-year design and permitting process by 2030 through digitalization and parallel processes, emphasizing cooperation between municipalities, housing corporations, and other stakeholders to create complete neighborhoods.
