Trucks Diverted from Merwede Bridge, Daily Damage Reaches 1.9 Million Euros
The closure of the Merwede bridge since late July due to structural issues with its steel arch is costing society approximately 1.9 million euros daily, according to the Economic Institute for Construction (EIB). Trucks heavier than 3.5 tons are banned from crossing, forcing them to take lengthy detours that increase travel time, fuel costs, and congestion on alternative routes. If repairs fail and traffic must wait until the new bridge opens in 2031, total damages could reach nearly 2.7 billion euros. Rijkswaterstaat is currently investigating potential measures for the existing structure.
