English Fire Brigade Experiments with AI Drone Swarms Due to Larger Wildfires
The Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service in northern England is testing AI-powered drone swarms, in collaboration with the University of Bristol, to combat increasingly severe wildfires. These autonomous drones can detect fires, communicate, and deploy extinguishing agents. Tim Murrell, team leader, notes climate change is intensifying fires, requiring more resources. The drones operate collectively, inspired by bird flocks, but always with human oversight. Military organizations, including NATO and the US and Chinese armies, are also experimenting with drone swarms. Researcher Georgios Tzoumas expects future swarms of 20-30 drones.
