Tunnels frequently disrupted by 'too high' trucks, causing significant delays
Increased truck diversions through tunnels due to bridge closures have led to frequent false alarms from height detection systems, causing significant traffic delays. The Heinenoordtunnel closed 478 times last year, and the Noordtunnel 1,489 times in 2025, largely due to sensors triggering on canvas covers or loose cargo rather than actual vehicle height. Transport operator Wilco van Herk claims the systems are set too strictly following recent renovations, while Rijkswaterstaat attributes the rise to increased freight traffic on alternative routes like the A15 and A16.
