The Word 'Houdoe' Is Not as Special as We Think
Jos Swanenberg, a language and culture researcher at Tilburg University, clarifies that the popular Brabant dialect word 'houdoe' is not derived from English, French, or Spanish origins. Instead, it originates from the phrase 'houd je eigen goed,' meaning to take care of oneself or let God watch over you. Although often considered unique to the region, similar forms exist in Limburg, such as 'Haije.' The term gained broader recognition when it was included in the Dikke van Dale dictionary in 1992 under editor Wim Heestermans. Language expert Wim Daniëls also contributed to its cultural prominence by writing a book on the farewell greeting and organizing a song contest, which was won by Maarten van der Zanden.
