Dutch films win awards, but competitive position under pressure
The Netherlands Film Festival has begun in Utrecht, highlighting that while Dutch cinema is gaining international acclaim with recent Bafta and Oscar wins, its industry faces significant challenges. The Netherlands Film Fund spokesperson Marieke van Zalk notes heavy reliance on public funding, as private investment opportunities are more abundant abroad. Producer Maarten Swart, whose film Downtown opened the festival, cites rising production costs, competition from streaming services, and a limited domestic market as threats to sustainability. To address these issues, experts recommend attracting private investors through mechanisms like tax shelters, similar to those in Belgium. Minister Letschert indicated in a letter to the Tweede Kamer that she will revisit this recommendation in autumn 2027.
