Record number of visitors and many volunteers at new asylum center in Nuenen
The new asylum seeker center (AZC) in Nuenen, Netherlands, hosted an open day that attracted 930 visitors, setting a national record for the Central Agency for Asylum Seekers (COA). Despite over 1,000 objections, lawsuits, and the discovery of an explosive prior to its opening, location manager Roger Vranken reported strong community engagement. The facility currently houses 150 residents from 21 nationalities, including 40 children. Eighty-five local volunteers have signed up to help newcomers integrate through activities like language lessons and cycling classes. Residents shared their stories with visitors, highlighting both the challenges they faced fleeing persecution and their appreciation for the supportive environment in Nuenen.
