Months Away from Home, but Seafarers Feel at Home Here
For over twenty years, the Sailors' Home in Moerdijk has provided a sanctuary for seafarers who are away from home for months. Under the leadership of harbor pastors Jan Willem Ester and Kabelo Lekala, volunteers offer relaxation, food, games, and clothing to crew members four evenings a week. The facility aims to be a 'home away from home,' offering amenities like karaoke and souvenirs while providing emotional support for difficult situations. However, increased port security due to drug seizures has made it harder for sailors to leave their ships, limiting visits. The pastors hope to expand operations by securing a dedicated building to allow for longer opening hours.
