Homoacceptance Among Teens Plummets: Less Than One in Four Boys Positive
A four-yearly HBSC report by Utrecht University and the Trimbos Institute reveals a sharp decline in homoacceptance among Dutch secondary school students aged 11 to 16. The proportion of boys holding positive views on homosexuality halved from 40.3% to 22.3%, while girls’ acceptance dropped from over 75% to just above 50%. Researchers attribute this trend to the rise of the 'manosphere,' which promotes conservative and misogynistic ideologies, as well as increased public debate surrounding LGBTQ+ topics like Purple Fridays. Although acceptance tends to rise as youth age, current levels resemble those seen in 2009, with only 45% of students believing they can openly disclose their sexuality at school.
