Flood of Visitors to War Files at BHIC Den Bosch: 'Of Course There Are Emotions'
More than 500 residents from the Brabant region visited the Brabants Historisch Informatie Centrum (BHIC) in Den Bosch this year to research their family’s wartime history through the Central Archive for Special Justice (CABR). The archive holds files on hundreds of thousands of Dutch citizens suspected of collaborating with German occupiers after World War II, with the National Archives in The Hague having digitized half of the 425,000 court records. Visitors can reserve three-hour slots to search these extensive documents, often uncovering surprising details about controversial post-war legal proceedings. Lisette Kuijper of the BHIC service team noted that while emotions such as sadness arise, reactions are generally neutral despite initial concerns about potential anger or frustration.
