RET Investigates Purchase of Bidirectional Trams
The Rotterdam public transport operator RET is investigating the acquisition of bidirectional trams to potentially reduce costs for new routes, such as the planned city bridge. These trams eliminate the need for expensive turning loops by allowing drivers to switch cabins at endpoints, offering greater flexibility during disruptions. The RET is currently gathering information from manufacturers regarding costs and technical specifications to determine requirements for vehicles that must replace part of the fleet starting in 2033. A decision has not yet been made, but the Metropoolregio Rotterdam Den Haag board is expected to discuss tram requirements in December before initiating an official supplier search.
