Chinese Automakers Drive Significant Growth in EU Electric Vehicle Sales
Sales of fully electric vehicles in the European Union rose by 45 percent in the first eight months of this year, largely driven by Chinese brands such as BYD, Chery, Geely, and Leapmotor. According to data from ACEA, over 1.6 million electric cars were sold, increasing their market share to 21.7 percent from 15.8 percent last year. While major European manufacturers like Volkswagen and Renault saw stagnant or declining sales, countries including France, Germany, and Denmark experienced strong growth. Hybrid vehicles remained the most popular segment with nearly 2.8 million units sold, while petrol and diesel car shares declined to 29 percent. Total new passenger car sales in the EU grew by 5.3 percent to nearly 7.6 million during this period.
