Former Cyclist Rini Wagtmans (79) Dies After Winning Three Tour de France Stages
Former professional cyclist Rini Wagtmans has died at age 79 after a long illness. He won three Tour de France stages between 1970 and 1972, finished sixth in the 1969 Tour, and placed fifth in 1970. Known as 'Witte Bles,' he also won two Vuelta a España stages before retiring early due to heart issues. Wagtmans later served as team manager and national coach, leading Dutch riders to world championship titles in 1978 and 1979. He was honored with the Golden Spoke by the KNWU earlier this month and previously served as an advisor for Astana and honorary consul of Kazakhstan.
