Triple Tour de France Stage Winner Rini Wagtmans (79) Dies
Former professional cyclist Rini Wagtmans, a triple stage winner at the Tour de France, died on Friday at the age of 79 after a period of illness. He recently received the Golden Wheel award from the KNWU for his contributions to Dutch cycling. As a rider between 1968 and 1973, he won two Tour stages, two Vuelta a España stages, and finished third in the 1969 Vuelta. Forced to retire early due to heart problems, he later served as a directeur sportif and national team coach. His nephew, Wout Wagtmans, was also a prominent cyclist who won four Tour stages before dying in 1994.
