Gelderland Introduces First 'Nitrogen Strips' Amidst BBB Party Division
Gelderland has become the first Dutch province to implement concrete rules for nitrogen reduction zones, known as 'nitrogen strips,' around vulnerable nature areas like the Veluwe and Brummen. These 500-meter buffer zones will enforce strict regulations this year, including a ban on new livestock farms, with additional measures such as mandatory barn modernization and fertilizer bans taking effect by 2030 or 2035. The Provincial States approved the package 37-14, despite division within the largest coalition party, BBB, where seven of twelve members voted against it due to concerns over impact on farmers.
