Dead Whale Washes Ashore on Ameland Beach
An eleven-meter-long fin whale carcass washed ashore at Hollum on the island of Ameland between poles 5 and 6. Local authorities decided to leave the body in place as it had been dead for some time, making cause-of-death analysis irrelevant due to decomposition. A researcher from Utrecht University stated that whale strandings occur only a few times per year and that most organs are no longer assessable. The decision was made in consultation with the municipality of Ameland.
