Fourth Death After West Nile Virus Infection, Patient Infected via Blood Transfusion
The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported a fourth death linked to West Nile virus, involving a patient infected through a blood transfusion from an asymptomatic donor. While the RIVM noted uncertainty about whether the virus directly caused death due to the patient's pre-existing conditions, Sanquin blocked further distribution of the contaminated blood. Infections rose from 18 to 28 in a week across six provinces, primarily via mosquito bites. Additionally, 30 new horse cases and 100 bird cases were recorded in 2026.
