This Year Had the Warmest August Ever Recorded Globally
According to Copernicus, the European Commission’s climate monitoring program, August 2026 was the warmest August ever measured worldwide, tying with July 2023 as the hottest month on record. Western Europe experienced its hottest summer, surpassing 2003. The Netherlands also faced record heat and drought, with code red issued for heat in June. Globally, August was 1.65°C warmer than pre-1900 levels. The rise is linked to greenhouse gases and a strong El Niño. Scientists expect 2027 could break further heat records.
