Government presents new offer to opposition aiming to improve purchasing power

NU.nl29 September · 18:5156 min ago

The Dutch cabinet has submitted a revised proposal to the opposition, removing planned cuts to social security and introducing a new funding plan for Box 3 tax reforms. To enhance purchasing power for workers, the government will allocate an additional 436 million euros by adjusting tax rules, including applying higher rates to top incomes. Finance Minister Eelco Heinen outlined that Box 3 changes involve shifting from taxing unrealized wealth gains to actual profits, funded by lowering the tax-free return threshold and restricting business owner withdrawals. While left-wing leaders Jesse Klaver and Mirjam Bikker expressed openness to further talks, right-wing parties remain skeptical about the fiscal approach. The House of Representatives is scheduled to debate these financial considerations on Wednesday and Thursday.
