Dozens of Dead Baby Whales Washed Ashore on Patagonian Beaches
Dozens of dead baby southern right whales have washed up on beaches in the Argentine province of Chubut, adding to several hundred deaths recorded since June. Local authorities and scientists suspect erysipelas, a bacterial infection, as the primary cause, though researcher Mariano Coscarella notes that human influence cannot be entirely ruled out. Despite the mortality rate, Coscarella states the event has natural origins and will not endanger the population in the medium term. This year, 1,375 southern right whales, including approximately 400 calves, were counted in the region, down from a record 2,110 last year.
