Sjoerd Kuyper Received the Gouden Griffel on His Deathbed
Author Sjoerd Kuyper was awarded the 2026 Gouden Griffel for his book *Maantje Moves to the Sea* shortly before his death at 74 due to cancer. The prize was presented early in Bergen, where he received flowers and cake from his grandchildren. The book, featuring illustrations by Sanne te Loo, centers on Maantje coping with her beloved Surinamese grandmother's illness. This marks Kuyper's second Gouden Griffel, following his 1997 win for *Robin en God*. Illustrator Kart-Janneke Rogaar received the Gouden Penseel for *Lucy en Donker*, with awards presented ahead of the Children's Book Week starting September 30.
