Banned Substances Help, but Seven out of Ten Adults Still Have Excessive PFAS in Blood
A new RIVM study reveals that while PFAS levels in blood are lower than in previous research, seven out of ten Dutch adults still exceed health-based limit values. Researchers analyzed blood from 967 donors collected in 2025, finding that 71% had levels above the threshold, compared to 99% in studies from 2016 and 2017. Although direct comparison is difficult due to different methodologies and participant groups, the decline may reflect the effectiveness of European bans on substances like PFOS and PFOA. The institute notes that PFAS does not disappear immediately from the environment or body, and elevated levels were also detected near the Chemours factory in Dordrecht and around the Westerschelde.
