If Tenants Have Significant Wealth, Their Rent Will Increase
The Dutch cabinet proposes mandatory income-dependent rent increases and annual wealth checks for social housing tenants to address overallocation, aiming to reassign homes to those with lower incomes. Under the plan, households with assets exceeding 118,714 euros would face higher rents up to the social housing cap, while those above 237,428 euros would be ineligible for allocation. Although current rules allow some rent hikes for high earners, the Woonbond housing association criticizes the proposal for stigmatizing social housing and offering limited relief for the shortage. The government intends to enforce these measures strictly, though exceptions may apply for specific life situations like divorce or inheritance management.
