Breda Surpasses Billion-Euro Threshold: More Housing, But Higher Costs
Breda will exceed one billion euros in spending for the first time in 2027, investing in thousands of homes, safety, and healthcare. Finance alderman Arjen van Drunen stated that this milestone reflects the city's growth to over 190,000 residents and its status as the third largest budget holder in North Brabant after Eindhoven and Tilburg. The municipality plans an additional 75 million euros for housing projects at Backer & Rueb, De Faam, and 't Zoet, alongside improvements to infrastructure and public services like school dental care. To fund these initiatives, local taxes will rise, including a 2.9 percent increase in property tax and higher waste and sewage fees. Van Drunen calculated that a homeowner with a property valued at 500,000 euros will pay approximately 70 euros more annually. Despite the increased costs, the city administration maintains that the budget remains structurally balanced through 2030.
