TikTok Settles for Millions in US with Time Limits and Access Restrictions for Children
TikTok has reached a settlement of at least $100 million with the state of Alabama, avoiding litigation over allegations that the platform is addictive and harmful to children's well-being. Under the agreement, TikTok will implement a daily two-hour time limit for users under 18, restrict access between midnight and 6:00 AM, and pause notifications during school hours. Additionally, young users will receive non-personalized feeds by default, be unable to use beauty filters, and face stricter age verification. In Alabama specifically, users will receive prompts for productive breaks after 15, 60, and 90 minutes of continuous use. The funds are expected to support organizations focused on youth mental health. These measures mirror similar adjustments made by Meta following settlements with nearly all US states.
