Falls Can Be Prevented: Training Helps Seniors Remain Independent Longer

CBS data reveals that 340 people visit emergency rooms daily after falls, with 21 deaths occurring each day. Although nearly 15,000 seniors participated in municipal fall prevention courses in 2024, participation remains low relative to the one-fifth of Dutch residents aged 65 and older. Experts like Sam van Oene of GGD Amsterdam and Wietske Hoekstra of Veiligheid NL note that many seniors underestimate their risk or associate prevention with frailty. To address this, municipalities are expanding risk assessments and using positive messaging to encourage training focused on muscle strength and balance, aiming to help older adults maintain mobility and independence.
