More Hospitals Want to Offer Late Abortions
Minister Sophie Hermans (VVD) informed the House of Representatives that several hospitals have expressed interest in performing abortions between 22 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. Currently, such procedures are only available at specialized clinics up to 22 weeks, forcing many women to seek care abroad for later terminations. The Minister emphasized that this initiative does not expand the legal practice but aims to better distribute existing services among Dutch hospitals. The OLVG in Amsterdam is among those exploring this care, though participation remains voluntary. Opposition parties SGP and PVV criticized the plan as undesirable or repugnant, citing concerns that fetuses at this stage are often born alive.
