Sjoerd Kuyper, Author of 'The Pocket Knife', Dies at 74
Sjoerd Kuyper, the author of the book and film 'Het zakmes' (The Pocket Knife), has died at the age of 74 following a short illness, as announced by his publisher Hoogland & Van Klaveren on Wednesday. Kuyper was primarily known for his children's books, which earned him multiple awards, including eight Zilveren Griffel prizes and one Gouden Griffel. He made his debut in 1974 with a poetry collection for adults before focusing on youth literature in the 1980s. His 1981 novel 'Het zakmes' was adapted into a film and TV series ten years later, for which he wrote the screenplay; the project won both a Golden Globe and an international Emmy Award. In 2012, he received the Theo Thijssen Prize for his entire body of work in children's and young adult literature.
