Experts advise against introducing 13-week pregnancy ultrasound: results often incorrect
The Dutch Health Council advises the government not to permanently implement the 13-week pregnancy ultrasound, citing that results are frequently inaccurate. Analysis of scans from 2021 and 2022 revealed that serious abnormalities were missed in 1,164 cases, while only 531 were correctly identified. Additionally, 60 percent of referrals for further investigation proved unfounded, causing unnecessary anxiety for pregnant women. Vice-chair Selma Tromp stated that the disadvantages outweigh the benefits due to these high error rates. Although experience may have improved since then, the council’s recommendation remains based on data from the initial rollout period.
