Afghan Cyclist Fariba Hashimi Wins Prestigious Silver After Fleeing Taliban Persecution
Afghan cyclist Fariba Hashimi won silver at the Asian Games after fleeing the Taliban regime, where women are banned from sports. Hashimi previously disguised herself as a man to train and race, enduring stone-throwing and harassment, including an incident where her sister Yulduz was intentionally hit by a car. The sisters escaped to Italy in 2022 with help from Alessandra Cappellotto’s foundation. Hashimi stated she was born in a country where women with dreams are attacked but hopes her story inspires future generations to compete without fear. She rides for Vini Fantini-BePink and aims to participate in the Los Angeles Olympics.
