Package orders from Temu and Shein set to become significantly more expensive from November
Consumers ordering packages from outside the EU, such as from Chinese platforms Temu and Shein, will face a new handling fee of 2 euros starting in November, adding to the existing 3 euro tax for orders under 150 euros. These fees are calculated per product group, potentially increasing the cost of a 30-euro package to around 50 euros when combined with VAT and carrier charges. The European Union aims to curb the influx of nearly 6 billion packages annually, only a fraction of which are inspected, to combat unfair competition from cheap, often defective goods. MEP Dirk Gotink supports the measure but insists the revenue must reach national customs authorities struggling with resource shortages.
