The Dutch social media platform Hyves has relaunched after thirteen years, aiming to provide an alternative to Facebook amid concerns over data privacy and addictive algorithms. Owned by Mediahuis, which also owns NRC, the platform went online with over ten thousand registrations already recorded. Originally founded in 2004 and acquired by Telegraaf Media Groep in 2010, Hyves peaked with more than 10 million users before being overshadowed by Facebook and Twitter. The new version features European hosting to keep data out of the United States and avoids the use of addictive algorithmic feeds, evoking nostalgia through its signature yellow background, dancing banana emoji, and text-based 'scratches'.
