Italian Bank Defrauded of Millions Using Deepfake AI Voice
Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy's largest bank, fell victim to a fraud scheme in February where scammers used deepfake AI technology to mimic the voices of CEO Carlo Messina and a senior lawyer. The deception led the then-head of private banking to authorize international transfers primarily to China and Hong Kong. Internal security systems detected the scam quickly, allowing authorities in China, Portugal, and Italy to recover approximately 60 million euros. However, around 36 million euros remains missing, having been routed through foreign accounts and converted into cryptocurrency. The Italian Public Prosecutor is investigating and has identified a foreign suspect, while urging all banks to remain vigilant against such sophisticated attacks.
