AI Scammers Impersonate Executive, Steal Millions from Italian Bank
In February, fraudsters stole 95 million euros from Intesa Sanpaolo by using artificial intelligence to mimic the voices of executives Paolo Molesini and Carlo Messina. The scammers tricked Molesini into authorizing urgent transfers to accounts in China and Hong Kong. Authorities in China, Portugal, and Italy recovered approximately 53 million euros, but 36 million euros remain missing, likely converted into cryptocurrency. While no arrests have been made, Milan’s Public Prosecutor is investigating a non-European resident for computer fraud. Molesini resigned as chairman of Fideuram in March for personal reasons.
