Foundation Behind Banking Disciplinary Law Halts Operations Due to Discontent with Banks' Stance
The Foundation for Banking Disciplinary Law (STB) is terminating its cooperation agreement with the Dutch Association of Banks (NVB), effective October 1, 2027. The STB states that banks frustrate improvements to the disciplinary system by marginalizing its function and reporting only minor cases already resolved internally. Consequently, the associated Disciplinary Committee and Board of Appeal refuse to continue their duties. Established in 2015 after the financial crisis, the system was criticized as unwise because it remained under bank control rather than being independent. The foundation urges Finance Minister Eelco Heinen to propose a robust, independent alternative to ensure integrity and restore trust in the financial sector.
