Over 55,000 Sudanese Refugees Flee to Chad This Year
According to the United Nations, more than 55,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to neighboring Chad so far this year, bringing the total number displaced since the civil war began in April 2023 to one million. The UNHCR reports a sharp increase in border crossings, with at least 400 people fleeing daily, driven by intense fighting between the Sudanese government army and the Rapid Support Forces in Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile regions. Severe drought and flooding further exacerbate the crisis, which affects 11.3 million people nationwide. While the UN has requested $1.6 billion to address the emergency, only 18 percent of funds have been received, leaving refugees in Chad in poor conditions with inadequate housing and water.
