Youth Prisons Under Increasing Pressure, Inspectors Urge Government Action
Three Dutch inspectorates have sent an urgent letter to the State Secretary for Justice and Security demanding immediate improvements to safety and living conditions in youth detention centers. Citing severe staff shortages since 2019, they report that daily programs are being drastically reduced, leaving approximately 450 detained youths isolated and violating their rights. Chief Inspector Elske van Amelsfort warns that resocialization efforts are under pressure due to these persistent bottlenecks.
