Calypso King Mighty Sparrow (91) Dies
Slinger Francisco, known professionally as Mighty Sparrow, died at age 91 in New York surrounded by family after a brief illness. Born in Grenada in 1935 and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, he was a pivotal figure in calypso music with a sixty-year career that included hits like "Only a Fool Breaks His Own Heart" and "Jean and Dinah." The University of the West Indies awarded him an honorary doctorate, and the Surinamese newspaper Starnieuws noted his special connection to Suriname, where he performed and released the tribute song "Paramaribo."
