New research: loneliness increases the risk of dementia
Research by Tessa van Baal from Maastricht University and the Alzheimer Center Limburg, published in The Lancet eClinicalMedicine, indicates that addressing seven modifiable risk factors could prevent over 30 percent of dementia cases. The study highlights loneliness as the highest priority for intervention, noting it accounts for 10 percent of potential prevention if eradicated. Van Baal urges the Dutch government to focus on creating safe, green neighborhoods with accessible social spaces to combat isolation and improve health outcomes, particularly for low-income individuals and first-generation migrants who face higher risks.
