Sorting Laundry Is Not Always Clear: Pay Attention to Prints and Materials
Cleaning expert Melenie Veldhuizen advises separating white, colored, and dark laundry to prevent color bleeding. White items should be washed at 40 degrees with bleach-based agents, while dark clothes require 30-degree cycles. Colored prints are best washed separately on short programs to protect the design. Veldhuizen recommends washing all colors together at low temperatures, such as 30 degrees, especially for new garments that may release dye. Material type also dictates sorting; delicate fabrics like linen should be washed apart from heavy items like jeans. Jeans and printed clothing should be turned inside out to preserve color and fabric integrity. Towels and underwear can be washed together at 60 degrees, while bedding requires a separate hot wash. Sportswear needs individual handling, wool requires cold water with special detergent, and delicates should use mesh bags or pillowcases to avoid damage during high-speed spinning.
