Dutch State to Acquire Majority Stake in Borssele Nuclear Plant to Extend Operations
The Dutch government is purchasing a 70% stake in the Borssele nuclear power plant from provincial authorities for 115.7 million euros, with an additional 119 million euros allocated for operational costs. This move aims to keep the facility open beyond its current 2033 deadline, aligning with Staatssecretaris Jo-Annes de Bat's view that nuclear energy is vital for a stable and diverse energy supply. The plant currently provides 485 megawatts of CO2-free electricity, equivalent to the consumption of Zeeland and North Brabant residents. While the First Chamber recently amended the Nuclear Energy Act to allow license extensions past 2033, final approval still requires parliamentary and shareholder consent. The remaining 30% of shares are held by German energy company RWE.
