AP Warns Against Spy Glasses, Calls for Ban in Sensitive Areas
The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) warns about the rapid rise of camera-equipped glasses, known as spy glasses, which allow people to be filmed without their knowledge. AP member Katja Mur advises banning these devices in sensitive locations such as hospitals, courts, and religious buildings to protect privacy. While filming in public is not inherently illegal for personal use, sharing recognizable images violates privacy laws unless consent is obtained, which is often impractical. The AP notes that indicator lights on these glasses are insufficient and can be manipulated, citing findings by the Consumer Federation. Although the AP does not call for a total ban like the CDA or the Consumer Federation, it urges venue owners to prohibit the glasses in their house rules.
